What are Tutor Qualities?
Tutor qualities are recognitions that students assign to their teachers after each lesson. They are meant to highlight the strengths of each teacher from the student's perspective.
The qualities that are highlighted on the Find Teachers page include:
- Fun
- Excellent Materials
- Great Conversation
- Great with Beginners
- Great for Intermediate Students
- Great for Advanced Students
- Tech Savvy
- Motivation Guru
- Cultural Insights
- Goes the Extra Mile
Why are my top three Qualities being displayed on my tutor card?
We highlight each teacher's top three qualities on their tutor cards to help students quickly find teachers who match the qualities they value most. For instance, if a student wants a teacher who provides strong learning materials, they may look for the "Great Materials" badge on tutor profiles.
How are my top three Qualities determined?
The qualities displayed on your tutor card are not simply the ones you have received the most. Instead, we calculate them based on how your qualities compare to other teachers. Here's how it works:
- We calculate the percentage of each badge type you have received compared to your total number of badges. For example, you might be 10% "Great with Beginners", 5.9% "Tech Savvy" and 14.3% "Great Conversation".
- We establish an average baseline for each badge across all teachers on the platform.
- We then compare your badge percentages to this baseline to see which areas you excel in. For example, if you are 10% "Great with Beginners" compared to the 8% average, you are 25% above average in that quality.
- The top three qualities where you stand out the most compared to other teachers are the ones displayed on your tutor card.
Why aren't the Qualities I receive most often always displayed on my tutor card?
The qualities highlighted are not based on the total number of times you received them but rather on how strong you are in that quality compared to other teachers. This means that even if you receive a high number of a certain badge, it might not be displayed if it isn't one of the areas where you excel compared to the average teacher. For example, "Great Conversation" is the most frequently assigned badge overall, so many teachers receive it often, making it less distinctive.
Why is this approach valuable?
There are a few key reasons we chose this approach:
- Student-Driven: The badges are assigned by students, not self-selected by teachers or assigned by Verbling.
- Highlights Strengths: We want to highlight the qualities where you truly stand out compared to others, not just those you receive most often.
- Helps Students Find the Right Fit: By focusing on your strengths as perceived by your students, we aim to help new learners find teachers who best match their learning needs.
How can I display certain Qualities?
The best way to improve your qualities is to continue delivering high-quality lessons that meet your students' needs. Pay attention to the feedback you receive and try to understand which aspects of your teaching resonate most with your students.
